Kids & Teens Pilates

"First educate the child" Joseph Pilates

Being a mum of 3 relatively active children, I have been able to observed first hand how today's children are far more sedentary than when I was a child.  Now days, children are stimulated by computer technology and non- playful movement and with the Global pandemic stopping them to par take in their weekly physical activities, isolating them from their social life, making them sit for long periods of time for online learning, I feel that now more than ever children need physical activity.

It is common knowledge that, as children grow, their bodies are in constant state of change and development. Teaching children how to move with ease with good quality movement pattern will help them through their childhood, teenage years and adulthood to stay healthy and prevent injury.

When practicing Pilates regularly, children will be able to improve:

- Their focus and concentration. While performing the Pilates exercises children will need to focus on one part of their body. Pilates places a lot of emphasis on proper breathing and the focused breathing techniques are essential to the exercises, encouraging a more relaxed state of mind.

Improvement in concentration will help boost their performance both in school and in sport.

- Their body awareness. Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that everyone can do at their own pace and level. There is no need to worry about keeping up with those at the top of the class and lessons can be tailored to suit. Pilates allows children to enjoy movement for movement’s sake and can help in developing healthy movement patterns throughout life whether they participate in sport or not. It will Improve balance and co-ordination which will reduce the risk of injuries and build their self-esteem no matter what sport they wish to pursue at school or later in life.

- Their core strength. Children spend a lot of time sitting, in front of a computer game, phone or at a desk at school, encouraging poor posture that can lead to a range of back problems in later life. But with regular Pilates practice this behaviour can be corrected and better spine alignment and posture can be achieved.

Pilates strengthens muscles, benefits the joints and increases flexibility. It is the leading form of exercise for improving core strength which in turn reduces injuries while increasing athletic performance even for those children who play a lot of sport already.
